Instructions for use: Preparing and administering an injection with the Enbrel auto-injector pen
This information sheet is intended to help you remember the various steps involved in safely injecting this medication. The instructions below can be used by patients who self-inject, or by those who administer injections to others.
| - Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Prepare what you will need: the auto-injector pen, an alcohol wipe, and a cotton ball.
- Clean the injection site with an alcohol wipe. The thighs and abdomen are the preferred injection sites. If the chosen injection site is the abdomen, make sure that it is at least 5 cm away from the belly button. If someone else is giving the injection, the outer area of the upper arms is also an option. Each new injection should be given at least 2.5 cm from the last injection site.
- Enbrel should be injected under the skin (subcutaneous injection). Do not inject into a vein or muscle.
|
| - Visually inspect the solution. Do not use if it is cloudy, discoloured, or contains large lumps or coloured particles.
- Remove the white cap from the auto-injector.
|
| - Pinch or stretch the injection site to create a firm surface.
- Hold the pen at a 90 degree angle to the injection site.
- Press on the injection button. Keep the pen firmly pressed against the skin for 15 seconds. Do not release the skin during the injection. The window should be yellow once the dose has been injected.
- Lift the pen from the skin and release the skin. If there is a spot of blood, press a cotton ball over the injection site.
- Dispose of the auto-injector in a sharps container
