Instructions for use: Preparing and administering an injection with a HumiraTM self-injection pen
This information sheet is intended to help you remember the various steps involved in safely injecting this medication. The instructions below can be used by patients who self-inject, or by those who administer injections to others.
| - Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Prepare what you will need: the self-injector pen, an alcohol wipe, and a cotton ball.
- Clean the injection site with an alcohol wipe. The thighs and abdomen are the preferred injection sites. If the chosen injection site is the abdomen, make sure that it is at least 5 cm away from the belly button. Each new injection should be given at least 2.5 cm from the last injection site.
- HumiraTM should be injected under the skin (subcutaneous injection). Do not inject into a vein or muscle.
|
| - Holding the pen with the grey cap pointed up, inspect the solution through the window. Do not use if it is cloudy, discoloured or contains particles. Hold the self-injection pen so that you are not touching either cap. Pull off the grey cap.
- Make sure that the needle cover of the syringe has also come off.
- Remove the plum-coloured cap to release the plum-coloured activator button.
|
| - Gently pinch either side of the area that has been disinfected and hold the skin firmly.
- Place the pen on the injection site at a 90 degree angle. Make sure you can see the window.
- Press on the plum-coloured activator button and continue to hold the pen against your skin for 10 seconds.
- During the injection, the yellow indicator will move. The injection is complete when the yellow marker stops moving.
- Pull the pen from the skin and press a cotton ball on the injection site for about 10 seconds.
- Dispose of the self-injection pen in a sharps container.
